【Humanities Salon Series】April 28, 2023 (Fri) | Prof. Hsin-ya Huang: "Stars, Voyagers, and the Ocean: Trans-Pacific Indigenous Writing, Arts, and Practices"

[Lecture Abstract] "Stars, Voyagers, and the Ocean" explores the intersection of Trans-Pacific and Trans-Indigenous studies, focusing on the literature and art of Indigenous peoples in North America and the Pacific Islands. By utilizing the imagery of shifting stars and ocean currents, this lecture deconstructs the conventional continental thinking shaped by imperialism.

The Pacific Ocean serves as a bridge connecting Indigenous studies across the Asia-Pacific and North America, fostering heterogeneity and using the daily practice of traditional knowledge as a foundation for Trans-Pacific alliances. These Indigenous intellectual and activist movements challenge colonial politics and continental ideologies rooted in nation-state sovereignty.
