Synopsis

This paper aims to explore the far-reaching glamour in one of the masterpieces of famous Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793)- The Mistress of the Inn (La locandiera, 1753). The story centers on the adventures of Mirandolina, the mistress of a prosperous inn in Florence. She is remarkable for her lively charm and her deft juggling of innumerable admirers. But now all her wit is challenged by the courting of three men, as well as by the equally interesting indifference of another. The "universality"of Goldoni's plays lends them to adaptation. The wide range of contemporary adaptations offers fertile ground for study. According to Dennis Kennedy, the key issue in a intercultural theatre is not whether or how it sticks by the original but rather, when positioned in its own cultural tradition, what ideas and creativity it shows. This paper explores the subjectivity consciousness and value of the outstanding Chinese adaptation: The Comedy of Sex and Politics (2001) by one of the most influential theatrical groups in Taiwan- Performance Workshop with various translation and adaptation theories.
