Synopsis

The Contemporary German Writer Siegfried Lenz, born in 1926 in Lyck, a small town in Masuria, East Prussia, is widely known beyond the German-speaking world, especially for his fiction published after 1945. Lenz is today still a very popular living writer next to Günter Grass and Heinrich Böll, both Nobel prize writer, as he has helped to shape the path of German literature through his outstanding narration of the reality. He received many literary awards. From his fictional work So zärtlich war Suleyken (1955), Das Feuerschiff (1960), and his breakthrough and best well known fiction Deutschstunde (1968) he has become popular as a writer of "Literature after 1945". The topics of his fictions are concerned mostly with tenderness of hometown, justice and duty as well as humanity. In my work I intend first to characterize German Literature after 1945 and analyze the reviews and critiques of Siegfried Lenz and his fictions. Secondly, I will represent six of his works: So zärtlich war Suleyken (1955), Das Feuerschiff (1960), Deutschstunde (1968), Das Vorbild (1973), Der Verlust (1981) and Die Auflehnung (1994). Thirdly, I will trace the intention of Lenz's use of the themes and to describe the vivid, tender and witty quality of his narrator's approach to reality. The purpose of my article is also to discover how Lenz, through his works, combines his responsibility for society with his own political enthusiasm and with his uncompromising moral standpoint, as an untiring SPD follower. Furthermore I try to discover how he develops the strategies to face all kinds of evils spread in society and to evoke a sense of humanity through the wisdom, tenderness and solidarity of the "little people", who serve as turning points in his fictions. They do this through appealing to duty and justice or through their unique intimate feelings towards outsiders and their 'Heimat' (hometown). I want to follow just how he can offer wise strategies for resistance, how he represents the conflict between individuals and society, how he illustrates the peculiar reality that demands moral decisions.
