A Chinese reception of a German novel "Brief einer Unbekannten" 李依瑾(Yi-Jin Li)

Synopsis

In recent years, there are a large number of Chinese-language films adapted from both Chinese and foreign novels, and the film "Letter from an Unknown Woman" directed by the Chinese director Xu, Jing-lei (1974-) is adapted from the German novel "Brief einer Unbekannten", which is written by the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig (1881-1942). This film presents a rich works of the change of narrative techniques. The film also presents the new Gender perspective, which differs from the perspective of the original novel. As director Xu produces more and more films, her early work, "Letter from an Unknown Woman" has brought a broader discussion. This paper compares the literal text from Stefan Zweig and Xu Jing-lei's film text and aims to explain the phenomenon of rewriting the German literary work into a Chinese film.
