Synopsis

Today’s world is a multicultural community, hence intercultural communica- tion research has both important theoretical and practical significance. The present study is a bibliometric analysis of intercultural communication research based on the Web of Science Database from 1950 to 2021, collected by utilizing Hiscite and CiteSpace. The findings show that intercultural communication research started to develop most rapidly after 2008. As an interdisciplinary area, the humanities and social sciences such as linguistics, educational studies, and psychology lead in the number of publications. Furthermore, the United States and the Netherlands dom- inate the research field in all respects. Intercultural communicative competence, intercultural sensitivity, and language education are the most prominent research foci today. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research and for inter- cultural communication studies in China.
