Compliment has played an important role in maintaining a good conversational relationship. However, the way to pay and respond to compliments is not always the same between differents cultures. The difference may bring about some difficulties in intercultural communication. The study reported in this paper, with the help of speech act analysis in pragmatics, compares French and Chinese compliment communications with their respective cultural meanings and offers thinking in French pedagogy.
